KENYA, PROTECTIVE SECURITY

Background

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) operates a number of substantial refugee camps in northern Kenya on both the Somali and Sudanese borders.

The UNHCR was looking for the provision of premium manned guarding services to its remote sites in Dadaab, Lockichogio and Kakuma as well as its central location in Nairobi.

ArmorGroup was successfully re-awarded the contract in 2006 to provide these services as well as guard the refugee registration process centres as well as a number of residential compounds.

ArmorGroup actions

ArmorGroup deployed experienced Kenyan managers to each location to integrate with the UNHCR management teams.

Using mobile training and selection teams deployed from ArmorGroup’s Nairobi headquarters, local guard forces were recruited, selected, vetted, trained and equipped at each site.

ArmorGroup’s managers developed strong relationships with the local communities and used them to select the guard forces, thereby ensuring that local customs and regulations were respected and adhered to.

Results

ArmorGroup continues to safeguard the UNHCR Registration process whilst at the same time ensuring the safety and security of the staff and assets of the UN and other international peace organisations.

Due to the continued success of the project, ArmorGroup has since been awarded the contracts to provide premium manned guarding services to all associated international peace organisation compounds in all of these UNHCR locations.
