NIGERIA, CONSULTANCY

Background

In early 2006, following the deterioration of the security situation in Nigeria, particularly in the Niger Delta region, a major German construction company commissioned a review of its existing Nigerian security management structure and associated procedures at both the strategic and operational levels. The construction company has had a presence in Nigeria for 30 years and boasts a workforce of over 17,000 employees. The long term objective was to develop a sustainable, ongoing and pro-active corporate security action plan.

ArmorGroup Nigeria was awarded the contract to conduct a Strategic Security Review (SSR) of the client’s Nigerian operations

ArmorGroup actions

Initially ArmorGroup deployed a dedicated and experienced international security consultant to conduct the Strategic Security Review, assisted by the country management team. The SSR incorporated:

  • The development of a bespoke security questionnaire which was circulated to 200 of the client’s international employees. On receipt of the completed questionnaires ArmorGroup’s team analysed the results to identify trends and perceived vulnerabilities.
  • A field review programme which included over 30 employee interviews and 23 site visits.
  • A vulnerability assessment to compare the client vulnerabilities against the likely threats, following the completion of the initial analysis and review programme.
  • A final assessment of the client’s vulnerabilities against its current readiness. By doing so ArmorGroup was able to recommend an action plan which would allow the client to operate within a security framework which addressed the needs of personnel, secured assets and facilities and which was able to adapt to a rapidly deteriorating security situation.

Results

ArmorGroup delivered a detailed report and presentation to the senior management team in June 2006.

In August 2006 ArmorGroup was instructed by the client to implement the proposed action plan which is currently ongoing and which will involve up to 14 full-time international security staff being deployed to Nigeria.
