JAPANESE CONVOY SECURITY

Background

In 2005 the Japanese Government announced that it would be supporting the reconstruction programme in Iraq by providing 23 mobile electrical substations in 20 sites across the country.

Due to the hostile nature of the environment and the extreme threat faced, ArmorGroup was asked to provide convoy security escorts for the collection, delivery and installation of the mobile substations.

ArmorGroup actions

ArmorGroup convoy security teams started work on the contract on 1 October 2005.

Each convoy team consisted of a mix of international and Iraqi personnel who were recruited and vetted through ArmorGroup’s Human Resources Department to ensure they had the correct blend of operational and regional experience and who had then been given comprehensive pre-deployment training at our dedicated security training facilities in Iraq. To support the convoys ArmorGroup provided 10 B6 armoured convoy security vehicles and 4 SAP cars.

ArmorGroup also provided the client with additional personnel for:

  • Planning and management
  • Site reconnaissance
  • Site security manning

Each convoy security team vehicle had the following equipment as standard:

  • VHF, HF, satellite and cellular communications.
  • 2 x GPS satellite tracking transponders with “panic button” facility.
  • Personal Protective Equipment for all team members, including cargo drivers when required.
  • Firearms relevant to the task.
  • 4 x comprehensive medical trauma packs.
  • Comprehensive breakdown recovery and life support equipment for all vehicles.

Results

Over the length of the contract, which finished on 9 March 2006, ArmorGroup consistently ensured the security of its client, under consistent insurgent activity. As a result of ArmorGroup’s well-equipped and experienced personnel, the client was able to operate safely and securely in the hazardous environment and all 23 mobile substations were delivered.
